Risk Management for Infrastructure Geotechnical Features
Risk Management is not a new concept. In fact, the earliest successful applications
were documented in the early 1970s. Risk Management has been and can be successfully
used at multiple levels within an agency or company: organizational, program, project
and activity. The benefits, limitations, and “misunderstandings” regarding risk
management are well documented. Unfortunately, this powerful tool is often
misunderstood and misapplied.
In general, the infrastructure community and specifically the geotechnical engineering
and construction communities have generally avoided applying risk management
effectively on a mainstream and routine basis. In addition, many engineers and
infrastructure specialists fail to be able to consistently document and demonstrate
the outcomes and value of risk management to their team members, managers and
external stakeholders. Finally, geotechnical specialists are unfortunately often not
represented in team settings where risk management training and project and program
applications are used.
This webinar addresses the basics of Risk Management with a focus on its application
for Infrastructure Geotechnical features: structural foundations, earth retaining
structures, engineered earthworks, geotechnical aspects of pavements and ground
improvement methods. The information in this webinar applies to all infrastructure
sectors: buildings, airports, pipelines, roadways, railroads, transit, ports and
dams.
