Jose N. Gómez, S. is Vice President / Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer and Director of Geotechnical Services for ECS Florida, LLC. After graduating from Javeriana University in Bogotá D.C., Colombia with a Civil Engineering degree in March, 1980, Jose came to the United States to learn English and to pursue higher education in the field of Civil Engineering. Jose earned a Master of Science Degree with emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1983 and he returned to his native country to continue his professional career with Ingetec S.A. through 1992 and then C.I.C. Consultores S.A.S. until 2008. During this time he combined his professional activities with educational practice as an adjunct professor in the geotechnical field for undergraduate and graduate courses in his alma mater university for almost 20 years.
In September 2008, Jose returned to the United States to work with ECS Mid-Atlantic, LLC to run the Virginia Beach, Virginia branch office. While in the Hampton Roads area, he was also an adjunct lecturer at Old Dominion University. Jose then transferred to ECS Florida, LLC in 2013 as the Senior Principal Geotechnical Engineer for Special Projects before becoming the Director of Geotechnical Services within the Florida region and overseas. Although based in the West Palm Beach, Florida branch office of ECS, Jose is focused on providing consulting to large and complex projects in the marine ports, heavy industrial, commercial and transportation sectors.
Jose has nearly 37 years of varied and extensive experience in a wide range of geotechnical and civil engineering consulting disciplines. He has managed teams of engineers and specialists in other disciplines for the successful completion of many designs and/or construction of large civil projects and related works. He has provided geotechnical recommendations and peer reviews for site preparation, earthwork, excavations, retaining structures, embankments, dams and levees, slope stability, dewatering systems, and foundation design and has been a forensic engineering special witness. Jose is a fellow member of ASCE, and member of NSPE, FES, ASHE, USSD and G-I of the ASCE; he is also absent member of the Colombian Society of Engineers and of Geotechnics (SCI and SCG, in Spanish).
A Husband of beloved wife Elvira for more than 36 years and Father of beloved son Jose Miguel (27) who has been married to Ana Maria Franco since 2015. Jose enjoys coastal and blue water sailing, fishing, cooking with his family, woodworking, reading and writing. He has published more than 40 technical papers and given presentations in a variety of conferences, seminars, technical sessions and proceedings related to geotechnical and civil engineering projects. He is the author of a book on sailing, “Mi Maestro… El Mar.”
