Harvey E. Wahls is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he served on the faculty at NC State for 37 years, rising from Assistant Professor to Professor, Associate Head and Director of Graduate Programs in civil engineering. Previously he had been an Instruct or at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Northwestern University. A native of Illinois, he received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from Northwestern University

At North Carolina State, Wahls had primary responsibility for the instructional and research programs in geotechnical engineering. In 1973 he was named a member of the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He directed research related to the engineering behavior of soils and has reported results in technical papers, reports and invited lectures. He also serve d as a consultant to a variety of private and public organizations on geotechnical design and construction problems, including the preparation of three syntheses of current geotechnical practice for the Transportation Research Board. He is a registered professional engineer in North Carolina.

A Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Wahls was a Member (1980-84,1988-92) and Chair (1982-83) of the Executive Committee of ASCE's Geotechnical Engineering Division and a Member of the Board of Governors of the ASCE Geo-Institute (1996-2001). He served as International Secretary of the Geotechnical Engineering Division and the Geo-Institute (1985-2001) and represented the U.S. on the Administrative Council of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and the Panamerican Committee for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering He also was a member or chair of numerous technical committees of ASCE and the Transportation Research Board and a member of the American Society fo r Testing and Materials, ASFE and the American Society for Engineerin g Education. He was a founder and the first Chair of the Geotec hnical Group of the North Carolina Section of ASCE.

In 1998 Wahls received the Outstanding Civil Engineer Award from the North Carolina Section of ASCE. In2002 he received the President’s Award from the Geo-Institute .
