Alfonso is a Principal with Terracon Consultants, Inc. and serves as the manager of Geotechnical and Materials Testing departments in Terracon’s Pharr office. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Universidad Rafael Urdaneta (URU ‐ Maracaibo, Venezuela) and a master’s degree from Texas A&M University (TAMU – College Station, TX) in Geotechnical Engineering. He has more than 27 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and project management, and has participated in projects in several countries of South, Central and North America, and West Africa.
Alfonso served as an instructor in Geotechnical Engineering and Foundations courses at Universidad Rafael Urdaneta (URU) and La Universidad del Zulia (LUZ), in Maracaibo, Venezuela. In the Fall of 2009, he was invited as a lecturer to teach Geotechnical Engineering and Foundations courses at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ‐ UTRGV (formerly known as University of Texas Pan‐American ‐ UTPA) in Edinburg where the Civil Engineering program was beginning to take shape. Since then, he has been a contributor to the growth and success of the UTRGV Civil Engineering department where he is still a guest lecturer and a student professional advisor.
He received the UTPA Outstanding Faculty Award in 2010 and earned the ASCE Texas Section Professional Service to Students Award in 2012. He is currently a member of the Advisory Board for the Architectural and Engineering Design Technology Program at South Texas College (STC). He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Civil Engineering Department at UTRGV and the College of Engineering of Texas A&M Higher Education Center in McAllen. Alfonso also served in several positions for the ASCE Rio Grande Valley Branch in South Texas including State Representative.
